Port Number Reference
Type a port number and see every service the IANA registry lists for it across TCP, UDP and SCTP — plus what really runs there.
A number is looked up in the registry; a range is explained; anything else searches service names.
Type a port number to see every service the IANA registry lists for it, or a range such as 1024-49151 to see which class it belongs to.
A service-name search reads the whole snapshot: 372,064 bytes, downloaded once.
Showing 216 of 216 common ports
216 ports are printed on this page; the snapshot behind the lookup holds 13,463 rows.
This page reads a snapshot of the registry. It cannot tell you whether a port is open anywhere — a browser has no way to make a raw TCP connection.
The three port ranges
RFC 6335 §6 divides the 65,536 numbers from 0 to 65535 into three bands, and which band a number sits in decides more about it than any single registry row.
| Numbers | Range | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 0-1023 | System port (0-1023) | RFC 6335 calls 0-1023 the System range. On Unix-like systems a process normally needs root privileges before it may bind one of these. |
| 1024-49151 | User port (1024-49151) | 1024-49151 is the User range: IANA registers a number here on request, and any process may bind one without special privileges. |
| 49152-65535 | Dynamic port (49152-65535) | 49152-65535 is the Dynamic range. IANA assigns nothing in it; operating systems draw from it for the near end of outgoing connections. |
Common ports
These 216 ports are printed in the page itself, so they read and link with JavaScript switched off. They are drawn from the same snapshot as the lookup — 13,463 rows retrieved on 2026-08-14 — and each row's number is its own link.

What really runs here
These entries are ours, each one linked to the project's own documentation. IANA does not list them.
Reading this page honestly
- Everything above comes from one CSV downloaded on 2026-08-14. IANA keeps editing the registry; this page does not change until that file is fetched again.
- A number is not a service. IANA files an entry under the number, the transport and a name, so one number can hold several rows that disagree with each other.
- An assignment reserves a name, not the number. Nothing consults this registry at runtime, so any program allowed to open sockets can take any free number.
- Nothing above 49151 is registered at all. Numbers up there are handed out by the operating system for the near end of outgoing connections, so a lookup there costs no download and finds no row.
Do it offline:$ grep -w 8080 /etc/services
How to use it
- Type the number in whatever shape you have it. 8080, port 8080, :8080, tcp/8080 and 08080 all reach the same lookup, and pressing / jumps to the field.
- Read every row, not the first one. One number can carry a TCP row, a UDP row and an SCTP row with different service names and different descriptions, and each row shows its own registry status.
- Type a range such as 1024-49151 to have it classified instead of looked up. That answer costs no download: it is arithmetic over the three ranges RFC 6335 defines.
- Have a word instead of a number? The table below filters as you type with nothing to fetch, and searching the whole registry is a separate button that prints its download size first.
Type a port number and this page prints every row the IANA service registry lists against it: each transport, service name, description and status, rather than one blended answer. The snapshot is the registry as retrieved on 2026-08-14 — 14,531 rows, 13,463 of them tied to a number. The lookup runs in this browser, and it cannot tell you whether a port is open anywhere.
How it works
A port number is not the registry's key. IANA files each entry under the number plus a transport protocol plus a service name, so a number reappears once per transport and again for every extra name registered on it. The snapshot holds 6,242 TCP rows, 6,234 UDP rows, 91 SCTP rows and 10 DCCP rows — which is why 443 answers with three and 80 with seven.
RFC 6335 §6 cuts the 65,536 numbers into three. 0-1023 is the System range, which Unix-like systems have historically let only root bind. 1024-49151 is the User range, registered on request and bindable by anyone. 49152-65535 is the Dynamic range, which IANA assigns to nothing at all — 49151 is the highest number in this snapshot, and the operating system draws from above it for outgoing connections.
An assignment is a name reservation, not enforcement. No kernel consults this registry: any program with the right privileges may bind any free number, and RFC 7605 spends its length asking implementers to use assigned numbers rather than describing anything that would make them. A row tells you what a number was registered for, never what is listening on it.
That is why a second, separately labelled list sits below. IANA registers 3000 as hbci and remoteware-cl, and no row anywhere mentions a development server; 5173 has no row of its own and falls inside a block marked Unassigned. The real-world entries are ours, each linked to the project's own documentation, and none is merged into a registry row.
The registry itself is too big to print. Its 13,463 numbered rows are packed into 7 files totalling 372,064 bytes, fetched only when a lookup needs one: the ranges are disjoint, so a number costs exactly one file and anything above 49151 costs none. In the page instead is a 216-port table you can read and link to with JavaScript switched off.
Examples
443443 · System port (0-1023) · The registry lists 3 rows for this port. · tcp https http protocol over TLS/SSL · udp https http protocol over TLS/SSL · sctp https HTTPSThree rows, three transports, and the SCTP row carries a different description from the other two. Printing one line for 443 would mean discarding two of them.
8080 · System port (0-1023) · The registry lists 7 rows for this port. · tcp http World Wide Web HTTP · tcp www World Wide Web HTTP · tcp www-http World Wide Web HTTP · udp http World Wide Web HTTP · udp www World Wide Web HTTP · udp www-http World Wide Web HTTP · sctp http HTTPThe busiest number in the System range: three service names on TCP and the same three on UDP, which is the triple /etc/services shows on a Unix machine.
80808080 · User port (1024-49151) · The registry lists 2 rows for this port. · tcp http-alt HTTP Alternate (see port 80) · udp http-alt HTTP Alternate (see port 80)The registry answer is http-alt on both transports. What is actually bound to 8080 on a given machine — a Tomcat connector, a Jenkins controller, a proxy — is in the real-world block, sourced separately.
30003000 · User port (1024-49151) · The registry lists 4 rows for this port. · tcp hbci HBCI · tcp remoteware-cl RemoteWare Client · udp hbci HBCI · udp remoteware-cl RemoteWare ClientTwo names each on TCP and UDP, neither the framework people expect. HBCI is a German home-banking protocol; the servers that default to 3000 are listed as ours, with links.
4915249152 · Dynamic port (49152-65535) · IANA has not assigned port 49152 to any service. The first number of the Dynamic range, and a real answer rather than an empty state. Nothing is registered here or above, so this lookup downloads no part of the registry at all.
1024-491511024-49151 · User port (1024-49151) · 1024-49151 is the User range: IANA registers a number here on request, and any process may bind one without special privileges.A range token is classified rather than looked up. Type the ends the other way round and they are read back in order, with a line saying so.
Every example on this page is executed against the same engine that powers the tool, on every build.
Gotchas worth knowing
Reserved is an answer, and so is Unassigned
Port 0 comes back Reserved on TCP and UDP, port 4 Unassigned on both. Those are rows IANA wrote, so they are printed as the answer rather than as nothing found.
Some rows cover a block, not a number
760 rows in the snapshot span a range of numbers. Ask for 5173 and the answer names the 5173-5189 block it sits in, since no row names it alone.
A blank transport column is a fact
886 numbered rows name no transport at all; 1,467 rows of the source CSV do. That cell reads “not stated”, since an empty one would look like a rendering fault.
Decorations and leading zeros come off
A pasted :8080, tcp/8080, 8080/tcp, Port: 8080 or 08080 is read as the number 8080. An all-digit query stays a port and never falls through to a text search.
Deprecated and squatted numbers are labelled
29 rows read unauthorized use reported — IANA recording that software took a number never given to it — and one reads deprecated. Each carries its word in the status column.
Common errors
65536 is not a port number — a port is a whole number from 0 to 65535.- A port field is 16 bits wide, so 65535 is the last one that exists. A negative number lands here too, since the field has no sign to spend.
That query is 150 characters long, which is past what this field reads.- The field reads the first 128 characters and refuses anything longer rather than quietly cutting it down, and the refusal prints the length you actually pasted.
80.5 isn't a port number or a range — try 8080 or 1024-49151.- Numeric-looking input that is neither a whole port nor a two-ended range. Rather than guess between a typo and a name search, the page quotes the token back and names the two shapes it reads.
That part of the registry couldn't be downloaded — the range classes, the table below and the real-world list still work.- Shown when one registry file fails to arrive, usually a dropped connection. It is a notice, not an error page: everything the page already had keeps answering.
FAQ
Why does one port number come back with several services?
Because an entry is filed under a number plus a transport plus a name. Port 22 went to ssh on TCP, UDP and SCTP; port 80 carries three names on two transports. All of them are equally real, so the lookup shows the lot.
What is the difference between system, user and dynamic ports?
They are the three ranges RFC 6335 §6 defines. System numbers, 0-1023, traditionally need administrator rights to bind. User numbers, 1024-49151, are registered on request. Dynamic numbers are never assigned and exist for the temporary end of a connection.
Does an IANA assignment stop other software using that port?
No. The registry is a shared naming agreement, not a lock: any program allowed to open sockets can bind any number nothing else holds. That is how the numbers in the real-world block came to be used as they are.
How do I find out whether port 8080 is open on my machine?
Not from a web page. A browser cannot open a raw TCP connection, so no site can honestly probe a port for you. On your own machine the operating system answers it — lsof and netstat both list what is listening.
Why is my development server's port registered to something else?
Framework defaults were picked for being memorable and free, not from the registry. 3000 is filed as HBCI and RemoteWare, and 5173 has no entry at all. Those two facts live in separate blocks so neither pretends to be the other.
How current is this list, and where did it come from?
It is the IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry in its published CSV form, downloaded on 2026-08-14 and shipped as a fixed snapshot. The registry keeps changing; this page does not, and the date is printed beside the data.
